Community-acquired infections, particularly respiratory tract infections, are the most common reason for visiting a doctor, a substantial proportion of these infections are the result of bacterial infection with S.pneumonia, S.pyrogene, H.influenzae, S.aureus and M.catarrhalis.
Cefuroxime axetil is available in the strengths of 250mg and 500mg as tablets and 125mg/5ml as oral suspension.



?-lactamase strains of H.influenzae are now highly prevalent worldwide >35%.
The most alarming situation is the rapid development of resistance seen within strains of S.pneumoniae.

For M. catarrhalis over 95% now produce ?-lactamase. Co-amoxiclav only oral ?-lactam currently available for which the MIC90 of penicillin – intermediately resistant strains of S. pneumoniae is consistantly below the peak serum concentration of antibiotic.

No oral antimicrobial agent currently available would be expected to eradicate DRSP better than amoxicillin.
Exoclav is available in the strengths of 228.5mg/5ml and 457 mg/5ml as oral suspensions and 625mg and 1g as tablets.



Excipro inhibits bacterial DNA gyrase, preventing DNA supercoiling and repair, and disrupting cellular activity.

Gram -ve. Spectrum covers:

Salmonella spp., Shigella spp., campylobacter, Neisseria (including penicillin resistant strains), Legionella pneumophilia and Pseudomonas aeuriginosa

Gram +ve Spectrum covers:

Bactericidal against a wide range of bacteria, however not suitable for treating pneumococci and enterococci

Atypical. Spectrum covers:

Chlamydia spp, mycoplasma and mycobacteria


No useful activity, but can be combined with an antibiotic active against anaerobes (such as metronidazole), should these organisms be present or suspected.
